Audit Commission
Worcestershire County Council is performing well, according to an independent report released today by the Audit Commission.
On a scale from one to four, the corporate assessment report rated the Council at three, stating that it is working effectively with partners to improve the quality of life for people in the county, and overall it is getting good results.
Mary-Ann Bruce, Audit Commission senior manager, said: “Worcestershire County Council is a good community leader and works well to promote the local economy and improve the environment. Good partnership working with the district councils has resulted in high quality customer service centres across the county.
“Outcomes for children and young people in Worcestershire are good, and vulnerable older people are being helped to maintain their independence. However, there are some areas where the Council needs to improve. For example, approaches to equalities and diversity need to be strengthened.”
Strengths include:
* The Council delivers excellent value for money
* It responded effectively to the damaging floods in 2007
* It makes good use of partnership working to improve conditions for local people
Areas for improvement include:
* Engaging councillors more effectively in the work of the Council and its partners
* Ensuring that policies consistently take account of the needs of all sections of the community
