THIRTY Halifax students who acted as ‘Peer Motivators’ at a summer university for young people received special awards for their efforts recently.

Local housing provider Nashayman organised the ceremony in Hanson Lane Enterprise Centre, Halifax, as a way of thanking the youngsters who contributed to Calderdale’s first ever Summer University.

Nashayman recruited and trained a team of 30 young people over the summer to help promote the university. They did a fantastic job going out into the community helping to raise awareness of the scheme amongst other young local people through ‘word of mouth’.

Their efforts attracted many students for Summer University, which offered a comprehensive programme of activities and training for 11 – 19 years olds.

As Bhavna Patel, Community Investment Manager for Nashayman explains: “Nashayman was chosen by Park Community Initiative to offer Peer Motivator training as our way of supporting Calderdale’s first Summer University. We could not have hoped for a more committed team, they did a fantastic job helping to make Summer University a success.

“Each Peer Motivator was presented with a framed certificate. There were also some fantastic prizes given out to those who generated the most interest.

“The event was our way of saying ‘thank you’ as well as the opportunity to launch our mentoring programme for some of our Peer Motivators. We are very proud of the team and plan to continue working closely with them on other projects throughout the year. If there is a Summer University in 2009 we hope they will be able to help us again.”
