TODAY IN HOUSING

On Thursday 6 November, Wayne Hemingway presented the CABE Building for Life awards at the Royal Festival Hall in London. 125 schemes were submitted for the awards, 24 achieved the Building for Life standards and six of those 24 were selected as winners of the 2008 Building for Life Awards. ‘City Point’ at the New England Quarter in Brighton, a development by Moat and Barratt South, was one of the six award winners while Moat’s Parcel 1C at Northchase in Newhall in Harlow, Essex achieved the Building for Life ‘Gold’ standard.

Building for Life is a partnership between several national agencies and is the UK standard for well designed homes and neighbourhoods. New housing developments are scored against the 20 Building for Life criteria relating to environment and community, character, streets, parking and pedestrianisation and design and construction.

According to the post awards case study: “The railway sheds alongside Brighton station have been the basis for the transformation of an industrial site into an exciting new residential area, the New England Quarter. The mixed-use element of the scheme and its careful integration with the rest of the neighbourhood were key to its success.”

Paul Hackett, Moat’s executive director: development and new business, says: “It is outstanding that two Moat developments have achieved the Building for Life standards. Both awards prove that regardless of the financial climate, Moat is continuing to provide stylish, desirable homes to those in housing need.”
