They have seen a patch of grass at the front of the school transformed to provide a sensory garden and cycle store.

Volunteers from Pennine Housing, the community and a whole range of businesses supported the project at Wisewood Community Primary School.

A ribbon was cut to officially open the garden (Tues) by chair of governors Sandra Tomlinson.

Deputy head teacher Debra Hetherington said: “A grass area at the front of the school has been completely redesigned and revamped.”

Seating has been built around trees, new paths laid and raised beds created to provide a herb garden.

“It looks beautiful and now we have a new cycle shed pupils can bring their bikes for a healthy and green way of coming to school.

“When the new bike store arrived the children were so keen to use it they turned up ready with their bikes waiting for it to be put together!

“Cycle lessons are now going to be brought into the school and all the children are also involved in the gardening.

“Volunteers worked on the project regardless of rain and the worst of the weather – nothing stopped them,” said Debra.
