TODAY IN HOUSING

Redhill-based Raven Housing Trust won a national housing award this week for an innovative water efficiency project. The Preston Water Efficiency Initiative won the Water Conservation Award at the 2008 Sustainable Housing Awards on 11 November in London. Raven also received a Highly Commended Award for two homes it built in South Nutfield earlier in the year in the Sustainable Smaller Social Housing Project of the Year category.

Residents involved in the scheme at the Preston estate in Tadworth are using more than 20% less water than before thanks to the initiative, which was a partnership of – Reigate and Banstead Borough Council, Waterwise, Sutton and East Surrey Water, Raven, the Environment Agency and the Government of the South East which provided the funding.

The Preston Water Efficiency Initiative was the UK’s biggest large scale water conservation project of its kind and involved fitting water efficient appliances at existing homes alongside a rainwater harvesting project and an education programme.

‘I am delighted that Raven has won this national award for the Preston Water Efficiency Initiative. At Raven we are extremely conscious of the impact we have on the environment and we are actively promoting environmental sustainability in all that we do. To win one award and received a Highly Commended in another category is fantastic and is good recognition of our cutting edge environmental work.’
