Is it a marrow or a Doctor Who monster? Is it a marrow or a Doctor Who monster?

The world's largest marrow, likened to a Doctor Who monster, is on display at an amateur gardening show today.

At 65kgs (113lbs) the voluptuous vegetable needed two men to carry it to a display table at the National Amateur Gardening Show, in Shepton Mallet, Somerset.

It is just one of the oversized exhibits at the giant vegetable contest taking place at the Bath and West Showground this weekend.

The knobbly-skinned phenomenon, grown by Ken Dade, from Norfolk, won its place in the Guinness World Records book yesterday after beating the previous record by 3kg.

Experts say the unique marrow has actually benefited from this spring and summer's weather, unlike other produce.

Over 30,000 visitors are expected at the show, where a giant beetroot which measured 640.5cm narrowly missed out on joining the marrow in the history books.

TV gardener Christine Walkden, and Gardener's World presenter Toby Buckland, are also attending the extravaganza, where a wealth of plants and flowers are on show.

Organiser of the contest Ray Davey said that a colossal cucumber was also expected to arrive and set a new record.

But some vegetables like pumpkins had been hit by the wet weather, he said.

The show is due to end on Sunday.
