End of an era as newspaper production moves out of Liverpool
The owners of Liverpool's two daily newspapers today announced 100 job losses and the end of more than 150 years' printing history in the city.
Trinity Mirror is shifting production of the Liverpool Echo and the Daily Post away from its base in Old Hall Street to Greater Manchester.
The Daily Post and other regional Trinity Mirror titles printed overnight will move to the site in Oldham by November and the Echo next year.
The old production plant will close completely by the end of next year - marking the end of 154 years of newspaper printing in Liverpool.
Rupert Middleton, group director of manufacturing, said: "This has been a very difficult decision given our history of printing in Liverpool and the impact on our team there.
"But this plan will give the North West publishing business clear benefits of improved print quality, full colour and additional inserting capabilities that are currently unavailable in Liverpool, as well as reduced costs."
A statement to staff said: "It is anticipated that the transfer of work will present an opportunity for some Trinity Mirror Printing Liverpool employees to move to Trinity Mirror Oldham.
"However, around 100 roles are expected to be made redundant over the next 15 months and a consultation process has begun today with affected staff."
The news comes as Trinity Mirror also announced major changes to its free and paid-for weekly papers across Merseyside, Cheshire and North Wales.
The company announced editorial job losses, office closures and mergers of other regional offices.
In addition, it is believed Liverpool's Daily Post morning newspaper faces changes by the end of the year.
A company announcement said: "We are exploring a number of options (to) secure the long term future of the Liverpool Daily Post.
"This work will be concluded by the end of this year."
